The woman who was taken into police custody following the shooting death of businessman Steve Ghany has been released.
This morning, following a meeting between police officers and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the DPP advised that the woman be released pending further investigations.
Attorney Prakash Ramadhar said, “She has been released on the instructions of the Director of Public Prosecutions. We want to express our gratitude to the investigators and, of course, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. We also want to establish, moving forward, what we can learn from this incident, and I hope in the near future to host a press conference to deal with the issue of domestic violence.”
Ramadhar said the woman was relieved to regain her liberty and return to her children and family.
“She expresses her gratitude to the many who have responded in support of her and her family. She will certainly be seeking the help required in these circumstances to overcome the trauma,” he said.
Ghany, 37, was shot several times at his Vistabella home following a confrontation with the woman.
He had been married for 11 years and was a father of two. Ghany was involved in his family’s construction business.
At around 8.30 a.m., an argument and physical altercation occurred between Ghany and the woman.
During the struggle, Ghany allegedly used a firearm to shoot at her, but she was uninjured. The woman then used another gun and shot Ghany several times.
Two firearms and 11 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene.
Over the past four days, the woman had been assisting police officers with their investigations.
