GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, Apr. 12, CMC  -Gloria McField-Nixon is set to make history as the Cayman Islands’ first female Deputy Governor when she assumes the post in July, succeeding Franz Manderson, who is retiring after 14 years in the role and more than four decades in the civil service.

    Gloria McField-Nixon

McField-Nixon, a career civil servant, brings nearly 30 years of senior public sector experience, including two decades as a chief officer. Officials say she has demonstrated strong strategic leadership, deep institutional knowledge, and a firm commitment to strengthening government operations.

Her appointment follows what was described as a rigorous and transparent recruitment process. The final interview panel was chaired by Governor Jane Owen  who  welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence in McField-Nixon’s ability to lead.

“She brings exceptional experience and a deep commitment to public service, and I am confident that she will serve the people of the Cayman Islands extraordinarily well,” Owen said.

Outgoing Deputy Governor Franz Manderson also voiced strong support for his successor.

“She inherits a strong foundation, and I know she will take it to even greater heights,” he said, adding that he will be “cheering from the sidelines with great pride.”

McField-Nixon described her appointment as an honour, saying she is stepping into the role with humility, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of responsibility.

“I want to acknowledge the remarkable legacy of Franz Manderson, who has set an outstanding example of servant leadership. I am committed to building on the solid foundation he has established,” she said.

She also pledged to work closely with colleagues across the public service.

“Together, we will continue to deliver the outstanding public services that the people of the Cayman Islands deserve,” she added, noting her commitment to supporting and empowering civil servants as the government strives toward a world-class public sector.

Officials say the transition has been carefully planned to ensure continuity. In the coming months, McField-Nixon will work alongside the governor, government leaders, and Manderson to facilitate a smooth handover.

She is also expected to undertake preparatory engagements, including visits to key UK government departments and meetings with international counterparts.

The Cayman Islands civil service employs approximately 5,000 people across 14 ministries and portfolios, delivering essential services nationwide.
