Officers from the Search and Identification Department of the Voivodeship Police Headquarters in Łódź detained 46-year-old Paweł K., who was wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the District Court in Olsztyn. The information was announced by the Łódź police on social media.
The arrest took place in Hrubieszów County in the Lubelskie Voivodeship. The man had been hiding from law enforcement after a final and binding judgment was issued in the fatal traffic accident case.
Paweł K., a lawyer from Łódź, was convicted of causing the accident, which occurred in September 2021 on the Barczewo-Jeziorany route. According to investigators, the Mercedes he was driving crossed a double solid line and entered the opposite lane, leading to a collision with an Audi 80. The driver and a female passenger of the Audi were killed at the scene.
The court of first instance sentenced Paweł K. to two years in prison and imposed a five-year driving ban. Following an appeal, the Regional Court in Olsztyn reduced the sentence to one year and six months of imprisonment, along with a four-year ban on operating motor vehicles.
After the verdict became final, the convicted man filed a motion to serve his sentence under an electronic monitoring system. However, the Regional Court in Łódź refused to suspend the execution of the sentence pending consideration of that motion.
The case attracted widespread public attention after comments made by Paweł K. on social media shortly after the accident. The lawyer described the crash as a collision between a safe car and a “coffin on wheels.”
