The senator of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP), Nicolas Vieradefended the president Yamandu Orsi given the criticism he received for visiting a aircraft carrier from the United States along with the ambassador to Uruguay, Lou Rinaldi, and other members of the government.
“Every colleague has the right to express themselves. Castillo is not the president, the president is Yamandú Orsi“Viera responded at a press conference, when asked about the minister’s statements.
On the other hand, the senator said not understanding the “transcendence” that was given to the sight of Orsi to the aircraft carrier. “The significance that is sometimes given to things is a bit strange,” he considered.
The member of the MPP, the same sector to which the president belongs, assured that the Orsi “did what he had to do” upon receiving an invitation of those “characteristics”, which put Uruguay’s relationship with the United States “at stake.”
Viera estimated that the president had to “weigh” between making the visit or risking the country being sanctioned with an “increase in tariffs on certain products.”
“What is the president going to do? Surely it is much more beneficial to visit an aircraft carrier“he noted.
The MPP senator, on the other hand, argued that there was no violation of the Constitution because there was no “landing of any foreign military personnel,” despite the fact that a US military aircraft landed in the country and transported the president and the entourage.
“It was only a contact to be able to take people to the aircraft carrier, which was also in international jurisdictional waters. Nothing happened that some of the members of the opposition have said,” said Viera.
