Madrid (Spain), May 6, 2026 (SPS) – On May 22, the Spanish capital, Madrid, will host a symposium on international legality in Western Sahara and the necessity of respecting human rights in the occupied territories, with the participation of an elite group of Spanish judges, lawyers, academics, and representatives.
This symposium, entitled “International Legitimacy, Western Sahara and Commitment to Human Rights,” is being organized by prominent judicial and human rights organizations.
The organizations responsible for organizing the event explained that the symposium aims to analyze the legal situation in Western Sahara and emphasize that the Sahrawi issue is a matter of decolonization, in addition to emphasizing the need to protect the basic rights of the Sahrawi people, most notably the right to self-determination and independence.
The symposium includes a high-level round table to discuss “International Legitimacy in Western Sahara” with the participation of prominent jurists and professors of international law from Spanish universities, in addition to the representative of the Polisario Front in Spain, Abdullah Al-Orabi.
This symposium will also witness interventions by a number of judges, lawyers and academics specialized in international law and those interested in following up the human rights file in the occupied Western Sahara. (SPA)
