The passenger ship Maliina Ittuk will be taken out of service when the new airport in Qaqortoq opens, reports Disko Line.
With several years delay, Disko Line’s newly built hybrid ship Maliina Ittuk arrived at Qaqortoq on October 20 last year. Now the ship will soon be taken out of service again, Disko Line states in a press release on Friday morning.
Disko Line states that a decision has been made to take the ship out of service when the airport in Qaqortoq opens. The airport is scheduled to open April 16 this spring.
According to Disko Line, it has not been possible to secure the necessary port facilities to maintain a stable and safe operation of the ship. This concerns, among other things, a lack of a permanent berth, access to shore power and stable berthing conditions.
According to Disko Line, it has several times been necessary to move the ship around at night to avoid damage when there has been rough weather. It has been challenging for the employees on the ship.
According to Disko Line, the ship is sailing on a contract that expires with the opening of the new airport. What will subsequently happen to the ship has not been clarified.
Maliina Ittuk is by far Disko Line’s largest passenger ship with room for 113 passengers. The construction of the ship was plagued by accidents and lasted a total of six years. The ship has hybrid technology and can therefore also sail on electricity.
