SAN MARINO – The majority, after the postponement of Coreper, intervenes to take a position and to reply to the minority forces: “The slowdown in the approval process of the Association Agreement within the European Council must be analyzed objectively and without speculation. We are not faced with a political halt to the Agreement, nor even a rejection of San Marino’s European path. At this stage some member states are completing in-depth analyzes and internal assessments, in a framework that requires prudence, diplomatic work and responsibility on everyone’s part.
Those who today, from the Opposition benches, cry out for failure or call for resignation, use these steps instrumentally to seek positioning advantages that have nothing to do with the general interests of the country.
As has been said several times, at this stage, San Marino does not have an active participation in the dynamics of consensus building within the EU, which is an exclusive prerogative of the member states, who have always demonstrated a firm will to conclude this process quickly and positively.
For this reason we believe it is of little use to transform every technical or temporal step into an internal political clash or into an opportunity to delegitimize the work carried out by the Government and diplomacy of San Marino. In delicate moments like this, a greater sense of responsibility and sense of the State is needed.
It is clear that judicial events that have had a certain international exposure can contribute to creating attention or sensitivity around the San Marino context. Precisely for this reason, however, it is necessary to maintain balance and clarity, avoiding simplifications or automatic connections that risk compromising the credibility of the country on an international level.
The Secretary of State Luca Beccari was categorical: the Government does not interfere with the court, but does not accept that extra-political events are used as a cudgel to attack the path of the Association.
We are at the last mile. All political forces should have the sense of institutions necessary to support the country in a moment of epochal transformation.
The path towards Europe rests on solid technical and political foundations: it is an unhelpful exercise to chase the various deadlines, confusing “if” with “when”. The Association Agreement is now a path confirmed by all the positive steps obtained to date in the European institutional context”, conclude PDCS, Libera, PSD, AR, Independent Councilor Giovanna Cecchetti.
