U.S. moves to automatic military draft registration for eligible men starting December 2026

Beginning in December 2026, eligible men across the United States will be automatically enrolled in the nation’s military draft registry, marking a significant shift in how the system operates.

The update, as outlined in a CNN report, comes from the Selective Service System (SSS), the agency responsible for maintaining records of individuals who could be called upon in the event of a draft.

CNN notes that up to this point, only some states had automatic registration in place. However, it was linked to processes such as obtaining a driver’s license, effectively serving as a contingency mechanism.

“Automatic registration is already in place in 46 states and territories, according to the Selective Service System’s 2024 report. The SSS proposed a rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs late last month to implement the practice nationwide,” explained CNN.

Although, on the books, former president jimmy Carter in 1980 ensured that most men between the ages of 18 and 25 are legally required to register into selective service, it still relied heavily on voluntary compliance by the individual.

Under this revised methodology, currently being evaluated before final approval, the obligation to sign up will no longer rest on individuals. Instead, registration into the selective service pool will be handled directly by the Information office, through coordination with existing federal databases.

This move toward automatic enrollment, was mandated back in December 2025, “tucked” into the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act.

The legislation was signed into law by President Donald Trump and included provisions which are reportedly aimed at reducing administrative costs and improving compliance, with officials describing the change as a more efficient, and “streamlined”.

The United States has not implemented a military draft since the Vietnam War, after which the country transitioned to an all-volunteer force in 1973.

However, recent global tensions—including concerns surrounding the current Iran war—have reignited public discussion about whether conscription could ever be reinstated.

“The nationwide measure has no connection to the ongoing war with Iran and was passed with bipartisan support months before the current conflict with the country,” asserts CNN.

Though his administration has refused to exclude the possibility of ground military action in Iran, legal experts note that Trump cannot unilaterally activate a draft, reports The Hill.

Any such move would require Congress to pass legislation amending the Military Selective Service Act to authorize the induction of personnel.

Addressing the question of whether there is an active military draft at this time, the US Military online portal states definitively: “No, the United States does not have an active military draft. The country has operated under an all-volunteer force since 1973, meaning no one is currently being conscripted into military service. However, nearly all men ages 18-25 are still required by law to register with the Selective Service System, which maintains a database for potential use in a national emergency.”

Even without an active draft, compliance with registration laws remains mandatory.

“Almost all male citizens and male immigrants between the ages of 18 and 25 are required by federal law to register with the SSS within 30 days of either marking their18th birthday or entering the U.S.,” as per a Time article.

Though select exemptions apply, failure to register for selective service is considered a criminal offense and can lead to serious consequences, including fines of up to $250,000 and prison sentences of up to five years.

Additionally, those who do not register may lose access to federal student aid, certain job training programs, and government employment opportunities.

In some cases, noncompliance can also affect immigration status, potentially jeopardizing a path to U.S. citizenship.

The policy continues to apply only to men, as women are not currently required to register under existing law but may enlist in service.

Meanwhile, an article in The Guardian, published at the end of March, has dismissed the possibility of a draft despite changes in the Selective Service program, describing it as a “political liability” for Trump.

The president was quoted on his June 11 Truth Social as saying, “The Fake News Washington Post came up with the ridiculous idea that Donald J. Trump will call for Mandatory Military Service.”

In the response to published comments in the Post from a former head of the defense department, he continued: “The Story is completely untrue. In fact, I never even thought of that idea.”
