The 12-year-old shooter did not face criminal prosecution because of his young age.
The grandfather of the 12-year-old boy who shot his classmates in the Viertola school in Vantaa just over two years ago has been convicted of a firearms offence for giving the handgun to the child without supervision.
One sixth-grade pupil died, and two others were injured after the boy began shooting in a classroom on the morning of 2 April 2024.
The Eastern Uusimaa District Court sentenced the 69-year-old man to six months’ suspended imprisonment.
The boy had been spending the Easter holiday weekend at his grandfather’s home, and the pair has been doing target practice, after which he asked the boy to take the revolver and ammunition to a gun cabinet upstairs.
He, however, did not later check that it had actually been stored securely in the cabinet.
The grandfather has no previous criminal background. He admitted to having committed a firearms offence.
While the 12-year-old was suspected of murder and two attempted murders, his case was not referred to prosecutors, as the age of criminal liability is 15.
