From the top of the football scene to a life filled with hardships, the story of Emmanuel Eboue is an example of how a dramatic decline can occur after a great career. The former Ivory Coast international, who played for Arsenal and Galatasaray, reveals today that he has been left with almost nothing.
In a guest appearance on the podcast, Ebue spoke frankly about the problems that have followed him in the past years. Although he earned millions, had a family and property, today, as he says, he cannot even see his children, Clara, Mae and Mathis. He recalled the period when he was about to sign for Sunderland, a moment that should have marked a new beginning but instead brought a series of problems.
“I was overjoyed, the coach wanted me to stay for two years and everything seemed ideal. But immediately after the signing, the complications started,” says Ebue.
His agents, according to his words, asked for a million euro commission, although, as he claims, they did not contribute to the transfer. He refused to pay, after which the case ended before FIFA, and the epilogue was a one-year suspension.
“I wasn’t even allowed to train with the team. That’s when my career started going downhill,” he says, adding that his marriage also fell apart during the same period.
After the termination of his contract with Sunderland, he returned to Turkey, where, as he reveals, he lived a secluded life and hid from the public while the divorce proceedings were going on.
The divorce further worsened the situation, Ebue was left without much of his assets, including houses and finances, and eventually faced bankruptcy. The hardest thing for him, as he admits, was that he lost contact with his children after a court decision.
