PARAMARIBO — The death toll following Sunday’s tragic incident at the Rosebel gold mine in Brokopondo has risen to two. The young man who was seriously injured in the morning after a fall from a great height and was taken to hospital, died later in the day, the police confirmed.
According to the police, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the University Hospital Paramaribo around 1 p.m. Another young man, who also fell from a mountainside, died earlier on the spot.

A group of pork goons was reportedly at a location where workers from Zijin/Rosebel Gold Mines had exposed a gold vein with explosives several days earlier. The group is said to have attempted to collect ore debris. The two victims were also part of this group.
The invaders were then chased away by a joint task force that monitors security in the mining area. During their flight, the two young men reportedly fell from a height, with fatal consequences.
After the incident, tensions ran high among the estimated one hundred pork brawlers present. However, police and soldiers managed to prevent the situation from escalating. As a precaution, the mining company was asked to move heavy equipment to a safe location.
In previous incidents in the area, company machinery and vehicles were set on fire by angry gold miners. The police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
