A United Airlines plane with 231 people on board appeared to have escaped a major disaster Sunday afternoon.
On final approach to land at an airport in New Jersey, one of its wheels caught a light pole and a truck on an adjacent highway.
This is reported by the AFP agency, referring to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The Boeing 767, which took off from Venice, finally landed safely at Newark Liberty International Airport shortly after 2 p.m. local time (midnight CET).
According to the preliminary findings of the police in New Jersey, the plane, while descending to the runway, hit the semi-trailer truck belonging to the bakery company H&S Bakery with the tire and the lower part of the fuselage.
It also knocked down a public lighting pole, which fell onto a Jeep passenger vehicle moving on the highway at the time.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees much of the region’s traffic, said in an official statement that no injuries were reported aboard Flight 169, which had 221 passengers and 10 crew members.
The driver of the bakery company’s supply truck was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was released to home treatment after treatment.
United Airlines has announced that it will launch an internal investigation into the incident. In accordance with the regulations, the crew was temporarily taken out of service.
