Bombers Football Club has announced a significant development for football in Northern Dominica, as standout player Davonne George has been selected to attend a European Development Tour Trial in Antigua, scheduled from April 9 to 12.
George earned this opportunity following an impressive showing at the Possie Cup Invitational, where he claimed both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and the Golden Boot. The club said via press release that his performances established him as the “most dominant and influential player” in the tournament.
The milestone is being viewed not only as an individual accomplishment but also as an indication that a more structured and credible pathway for football development is taking shape in the northern region of Dominica, said the release. The Possie Cup Invitational itself was created to provide a competitive environment where players can showcase their abilities, gain exposure, and progress to higher levels of the sport.
According to the club, George’s performances throughout the competition reflected this objective. His goal-scoring consistency, creativity on the field, and leadership in high-pressure situations drew attention and ultimately led to this opportunity for international exposure.
The upcoming European Development Tour Trial, hosted in Antigua by Jets Football Club, is designed to simulate the standards of professional football. Participants will take part in advanced training sessions, competitive matches, and evaluations conducted by international scouts and coaches. The program also offers potential pathways into European football for players who stand out.
The club has emphasized its approach as long-term strategy which includes creating competitive platforms such as the Possie Cup Invitational, identifying emerging talent, and establishing pathways that connect players to trials, scholarships, and international opportunities.
Following a strong Under-18 season in which the club finished second, Bombers FC says it has increased its focus on helping young players transition from youth football into tangible advancement opportunities.
It is reported that the initiative has also had wider effects within the Portsmouth community. Football events associated with the program have drawn teams, supporters, and visitors from across Dominica and the wider region, contributing to local economic activity for businesses, vendors, transportation providers, and service operators.
“Investment in football is investment in community. As the game grows, so does opportunity, not just for players, but for everyone.”
Support for these efforts has come from several stakeholders, including Fenella Wenham Sheppard and Nicole Andrew of Island Travel, along with a growing network of partners committed to advancing football in Northern Dominica.
George’s progress is also being presented as an example to aspiring young footballers in the north of the country, reinforcing the message that opportunities for advancement are increasingly accessible.
