CariCarib and Danse4Nia unite in ‘Collaboration’

A shared vi­sion first sparked on an in­ter­na­tion­al stage came to life be­fore a lo­cal au­di­ence when Cari­Carib Dance and Danse4Nia/Phoenix Danse pre­sent­ed Col­lab­o­ra­tion at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s, on April 26.

The pro­duc­tion, years in the mak­ing, traced its ori­gins to 2018, when the two com­pa­nies crossed paths at the World Con­gress on Dance Re­search in Athens, Greece. What be­gan as a meet­ing of artis­tic minds evolved in­to a transna­tion­al part­ner­ship ground­ed in a shared com­mit­ment to sto­ry­telling through move­ment.

The show served as a fundrais­er for a joint pro­duc­tion sched­uled for Philadel­phia this No­vem­ber, po­si­tion­ing both com­pa­nies to ex­pand their reach and deep­en their cre­ative ex­change on an in­ter­na­tion­al plat­form.

The evening’s pro­gramme fea­tured twelve pieces. Au­di­ences were tak­en on a jour­ney through folk tra­di­tions and con­tem­po­rary ex­pres­sions.

At the helm were artis­tic di­rec­tors An­dre Largen and An­toinette M. Cow­ard-Gilmore, whose lead­er­ship shaped the pro­duc­tion’s vi­sion and co­her­ence. Their part­ner­ship was ev­i­dent not on­ly in the the­mat­ic align­ment of the pieces but al­so in the dis­ci­plined ex­e­cu­tion by the per­form­ers.

The Cari­Carib Dance en­sem­ble brought to­geth­er a strong cast of dancers—Na­talia Williams, Lib­er­ty Burke, An­to­nia Hold­er, Jade Mc Bar­nette, Aquila Ma­son, Ian and Dion Bap­tiste, Gabriel St Bernard, Joshua Rol­lock and Raushawn Lewis—each con­tribut­ing tech­ni­cal pre­ci­sion and emo­tion­al depth. Guest per­form­ers Ny­ka Samuel, Lenni­ah Re­my-Al­fred and Jae­len James added fur­ther di­men­sion, re­in­forc­ing the col­lab­o­ra­tive spir­it at the heart of the pro­duc­tion.

The fu­sion of folk id­ioms with mod­ern dance vo­cab­u­lary high­light­ed not just styl­is­tic ver­sa­til­i­ty, but al­so a de­lib­er­ate ef­fort to bridge cul­tur­al nar­ra­tives across ge­o­gra­phies. This was par­tic­u­lar­ly sig­nif­i­cant giv­en the project’s in­ter­na­tion­al roots and its for­ward-look­ing tra­jec­to­ry.

By the fi­nal cur­tain, Col­lab­o­ra­tion had achieved more than its im­me­di­ate goal of fundrais­ing. It reaf­firmed the po­ten­tial of cross-cul­tur­al artis­tic part­ner­ships and demon­strat­ed how sus­tained cre­ative di­a­logue can trans­late in­to com­pelling stage work. As the com­pa­nies now turn their fo­cus to Philadel­phia, the Queen’s Hall per­for­mance stands as both a mile­stone and a promise of what is yet to come.
