The Labour Party thought that calling an early election would have caught the Nationalist Party on the wrong foot and unprepared, but as soon as the date was announced the PN showed that it was ready for the challenge, PN leader Alex Borg said.
Speaking in Gharghur on Thursday, Borg said that just days before the election date was announced, Labour officials were saying that the possibility of an early election had not even been discussed. One of them had said that it would be crazy to call an early election given the country’s situation.
But this was just an attempt to catch the PN off guard. Yet, just hours after the election date was given, the PN was prepared with its posters, billboards, slogan and candidates, along with its proposals how to make the country better, starting off with the health sector.
Prime Minister Robert Abela said that the election was called early as a result of the volatile situation in the world, but the real reason is that the Nationalist Party is becoming stronger day after day, Borg said.
“We are determined to give a fresh start to the country,” he said, and a new PN government will take it in the right direction.
He said that Labour does not make a distinction between what is government and what is a political party, and it is using public funds to attempt to sway voters in its favour. Borg mentioned, for example, how screen savers on computers used by public servants included government propaganda.
This is abuse of public funds, Borg said, adding government-paid billboard spaces are being used to advertise for the PL.
The activity was also addressed by all Nationalist Party candidates who will be contesting on the ninth district.
