The Royal Grenada Police Force has responded to 5 fire-related incidents for the tri-island state within the past 72 hours. The incidents include 2 dwelling house fires, 1 storeroom fire, 1 rubbish fire, and 1 bush fire.
Dwelling house fires are often caused by electrical faults, unattended cooking, improper use of candles, or faulty appliances, while shed fires may result from the storage of flammable materials, fuel leaks, or discarded smoking items. Rubbish fires typically occur when waste is burned carelessly or ignited by sparks, glass, or chemicals, and bush fires are commonly caused by dry conditions combined with human activities such as land clearing, unattended campfires, or discarded cigarettes, as well as natural factors like lightning.
Members of the public are strongly advised to:
- Avoid outdoor burning (Ministry of Agriculture suspends the issuance of open burn permits as of 23.04.26)
Persons are reminded that according to Section 7 of the Agricultural Fires Act, every person who sets fire on, or procures, aids or abets the setting of fire on any land (except under the provisions of section 5) without a licence under this Act shall be liable to a fine of $500 and to imprisonment for 3 months - Never leave fires unattended
- Properly extinguish any flames or hot materials
- Keep sheds and storage areas free of excessive flammable materials
Additionally, individuals found engaging in unauthorised burning will be subject to penalties under Sections 146 and 147 of the Criminal Code, Chapter 72A of Volume 4 of the 2010 Continuous Revised Edition of the Laws of Grenada.
If you see smoke or fire, report it immediately to the Fire Department by calling 911, 435-7270 or 405-6881. Early reporting allows firefighters to respond quickly and prevent disaster.
