Also this year, the firefighters of PGD Orehovci set about setting up the May Day tree or, as they say in Slovenske gorice, “the young one”. “majhe”, which, as a traditional spring custom, symbolizes fertility, growth, connecting the villagers and Labor Day. So on this year’s Labor Day, on Friday, May 1, at the fire station in the center of the village of Orehovci, right next to the regional road Gornja Radgona – Ptuj, many residents of Orehovci, Orehovske Vrh and Ptujska Cesta, as well as from elsewhere, gathered to attend the setting up of this year’s village festival, for which a local woman donated a spruce Dana Borko.
Soon after, everyone could admire the 27-meter-high flag on which the Slovenian national flag flew. An entrepreneur offered his help to make the installation safe and simpler this year as well Roman Zorko – Transports Zorka from nearby Janževe Vrh.

At the beginning of a pleasant gathering, the vice president of PGD Orehovci gave the opening address Marjan Ščančar greeted everyone present and thanked the mayor of Gornja Radgona for their presence, Urška Mauko Tušthe deputy mayor Miran Doklto the delegation from the friendly PGD Črneče from Carinthia, and to all present locals and invited guests.

Among other things, Ščančar emphasized: “It is a beautiful tradition to set up a young man and gather around him, which came to life again after a long break four years ago, may it unite us villagers for years to come.” This tree should symbolize celebration and celebration in honor of our patron saint of firefighters, St. Florian and the feast of delain unity.”

The mayor of Radgon, Urška Mauko Tuš, added to this solemn event: “I am proud of such events in our municipality and local community, as the peak of this festive new year proudly rises to the heights. Every such and similar event in our community, which connects and unites people and preserves tradition, strengthens us and sets the right guidelines for mutual relations.”
At this event, which was primarily intended for a meeting of the villagers, she also shared some memories of the setting of the young man from the past, when the young man was still set up by hand. The young men of the village climbed it competitively in order to reach the top, thus proving themselves in front of the girls and the villagers.
A sausage and a liter of local wine were hung at the top as a prize, and of course also a cash prize for the best one. At this meeting, those present had the opportunity to answer the prize question, which this year was: What is the circumference of the trunk of a young tree at a height of five meters? The answer was exactly one meter and the closest to the correct answer were: Anton Tratnjek, Marija Štefanec and Zlatko Rajh, who also received prizes.
A well-known humorist also provided a pleasant atmosphere at the meeting Shower only – Korland DUO Kristjan and Danilo for musical bouncy rhythms.
