The president of the United States, donald trumpsaid this Friday that Iran “has made progress” in negotiations with his country, although he admitted to being unsure whether Tehran will meet the requirements demanded by Washington.
“They’ve made progress, but I’m not sure they will ever reach the goal,” Trump explained on the White House lawn before leaving for Florida for an event related to the November midterm elections.
“They are asking for things that we cannot accept,” he added regarding the offer from Tehran, which has tried in recent weeks to propose alternatives regarding its nuclear program to Washington, which insists that the Islamic republic must suspend uranium enrichment and desist from developing an atomic weapon.
“We are doing everything in terms of negotiation right now, in terms of telephone negotiation,” Trump said, confirming that he has received a new Iranian proposal, of which he did not offer details.
The US president insisted that the Iranian leadership “is very fragmented” and that the White House is considering military measures if an agreement is not reached with Iran to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“There are options. Do we want to go and just wipe them out completely to wipe them out forever or do we want to try to reach an agreement? Those are the options,” said Trump, who claimed to have received updated data from the Pentagon on the military options available.
In any case, Trump stressed that he continues to prefer a negotiated solution to the conflict.
“From a human point of view, I would prefer not to do it,” he concluded.
