Laayoune Province, May 1, 2026 (SPS) – The General Union of Workers of Saguia El Hamra and Oued Eddahab, today, Thursday, in Laayoune Province, and like other labor and trade union movements across the world, commemorated the International Labor Day, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the Sahrawi Republic, renewing their determination to continue the struggle until independence is achieved.
In a statement to SAS on the sidelines of this celebration, the Minister of Public Service and Administration Promotion, Salek Baba Hasna, confirmed that the commemoration of Labor Day represents an occasion to renew the Sahrawi people’s adherence to the choice of struggle for freedom and independence, highlighting that this anniversary comes in an exceptional context that coincides with fifty years of steadfastness and resistance.
He explained that the Sahrawi working class, along with various groups of people, commemorates this global occasion under special circumstances, as the Sahrawis continue their struggle despite the dispersion between the occupied territories and refugee camps, but they remain united around one goal, which is to achieve their legitimate aspirations.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Saguia El Hamra and Wadi El Dahab Workers Union, Nafi Ahmed Mohamed, pointed out that this anniversary represents “an opportunity to renew the commitment to continue the struggle to liberate man and land from colonialism,” highlighting that the Sahrawi institutional experience has been supported by the struggles of the working class and its continuous contributions in the various stages of the struggle.
He pointed out the depletion of Sahrawi natural resources “with the participation of foreign entities and companies in violation of international laws,” coinciding with attempts to change the demographic composition in the occupied territories and the resulting exclusion of Sahrawi talents and pushing them toward unemployment.
The event concluded by emphasizing that commemorating this day constituted a pause to honor the Sahrawi workers and remember their struggle, in a way that strengthens the efforts aimed at achieving the aspirations of the Sahrawi people for freedom and independence. (SPA)
