Maypole
In addition to reviving the tradition of erecting the Maypole, the Friday event “Village May Day” at the Sóstó Open-Air Museum in Nyíregyháza (eastern Hungary) will feature music and dance performances, a tractor parade, concerts, craft workshops, folk games, and a dance party.
The Sóstó Museum Village welcomes visitors with a full day of programs: after the gates open in the morning, the Kavics Ensemble’s musical performance will draw the audience to the village center, followed by the raising of the Maypole at the Jánkmajtis farmstead where the Kismargaréta and Margaréta Dance Ensembles will bring to life and preserve the distinctive elements of the tradition.
At noon, visitors are invited on a discovery walk through the ethnographic village, and with the participation of the Kelet Brass Band, a tractor parade will be held from the Jánkmajtis farmstead to the village center.
The event then continues with an early afternoon concert by the students and teachers of the folk music department at the László Vásárhelyi Reformed Elementary School of Arts, which will conclude with a dance party.
Accompanying activities—including craft workshops, a folk playground, horse-drawn carriage rides, food tastings, map games, and a folk school lesson—will add color to the Sóstó village May Day celebration, which requires the purchase of a program ticket for admission.
