Ways to take legal action against his decision Ministry of Environment to “freeze” the construction works on the north-eastern coast of Milos are sought by the owners of the affected tourist units under construction. As they claim, many businessmen have been exposed financially for the construction of their units, which as a whole are of small capacity and some have joined the ESPA or in the development law. And the suspension of all building activity will lead many to financial ruin.
The amendment, with which the Ministry of the Environment stopped until the end of the year the issuance of building permits in all the non-planned areas of the island, as well as the construction works on the north-eastern coast, was voted yesterday by the Parliament. The settlement comes a year after it was revealed that a hotel was being built by the sea, atop rare geological formations in Fireplaces (near Sarakiniko) and while it has already been ordered by the Co suspension of operations at a very large hotel unit in Mytakas (White Coast).
The entrepreneurs who have started building tourist units in the wider area Kaminion – Mytaka they are upset. “They have destroyed us. I am building a 12-room hotel in Kaminia, 450 meters from the sea. We have completed the carrier organization and at the moment I have 70-80 crews of all specialties, for whom I rent 7 houses, which will have to leave”, says Apostolos Moschovos (Alimnia IKE company). “I joined the development law and got a loan corresponding to the amount with which I will be subsidized, as the subsidy is paid when you reach 90% of the work – and today I am at 60%. I had estimated the unit to be operational in 2027 and at the moment I don’t know how to deal with the issue of the loan, the development, the workshops that I have committed and will not find after that. We are also in communication with other businessmen who are in a similar position, in order to take legal action against the decision.”
“The amendment is unthinkable, we all “pay” for Sarakiniko and the White Coast“, says Christos Michael (E. Michael-A. Kamateris OE company), which is building a 14-room unit in the area. “We have joined the NSRF and in terms of progress, we are in the construction of the supporting organization of the buildings. We are with those who talk about gentle development on the island, for small units that are in harmony with the environment, for the protection of those areas that need to be protected. Nor are we in favor of promiscuity – we know that if the island continues to develop at this rate there will be a serious problem of infrastructure, water and coke. But you can’t just make a decision and blow up so many people’s business plans. We have all opened up financially, we have crews on the island that will leave and we don’t know where we will be headed.”
“I am a native of Milios, raised in Mytaka,” says Mr Francis Mavroyiannis. “Since 1996, I have been operating the Agnati hotel, with a capacity of 14 rooms. A few years ago we decided to put all our savings into modernizing and expanding the unit to reach 22 rooms. At this moment our suspension stops at a critical point, above which we complete the carrier organism. I have been on the phone with the contractor since the day before yesterday, let’s see what we will do. I wonder how I will operate this year, with the whole unit a construction site, we were expecting things to be different by the summer. I am an open-minded person, I agree that the world has changed and there must be control over the construction in all of Milos, because the whole case will develop into a “bubble”. But it is absurd to stop construction in progress, with crews on the island, when they are completely legal. The Ministry of the Interior must show flexibility to those who are in progress.”
