A migrant 33 year old Cuban died in custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of Georgia, in what authorities are investigating as a suicideas reported this Friday by the US Government.
According to a statement published this Friday by ICE, Denny Adán González33, died on April 28 at the Stewart Detention Center in the state of Georgia.
The staff of the center managed by the private company CoreCivic found González “unconscious” in his cell around 10:25 p.m. local time that day and after several attempts to revive him, he was declared dead around 11:11 p.m., according to the official version.
The agency indicated that the event is being investigated and that the cause of death is presumed to be suicide.
With this case, the number of deaths rises to 18 so far this year in immigration custody, already 50 since January 2025, when Trump assumed the presidency. Last year, 32 people died in migrant detention centers, the highest number in more than 20 years.
González’s death was first reported by the journalist and lawyer Andrew Free who, citing sources within the Steward detention center, assured that the migrant was being held in solitary confinement.
The anti-immigrant policies of the current Government, together with the push for arrests in the interior of the country, have led to record numbers of arrests. In January, more than 73,000 migrants remained detained in the United States, the highest level since the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2001.
