In the st. A wind farm with three to four turbines is to be built in the Gallic community of Sennwald, around ten kilometers from Feldkirch. The Office for Spatial Development and Geoinformation of the Canton of St. Gallen has initiated the process for a cantonal special use plan.
The community of Sennwald, the local electricity company and two energy companies are behind the project. They submitted the application together to the canton. Wind measurements have been running since autumn 2025 and are expected to last a total of around one and a half years. Initial estimates assume that the wind farm could supply around 25 gigawatt hours of electricity annually – enough for up to 5,000 households.
Long road to construction
Over the next two years, further fundamentals are to be developed, including an environmental impact assessment. This is a prerequisite for approval of the project. Public participation is also planned in the course of the process: the public can submit concerns and statements.
If the project is classified as eligible for approval, the planning documents will be published publicly. Construction can only begin after an overall decision by the cantonal government – and if there are no longer any legal appeals pending.
The Sennwalder Au/Büchel area is one of a total of 15 zones in the canton of St. Gallen that were defined in the master plan for the use of wind energy. Wind power is expected to make an important contribution to electricity supply, especially in winter, when solar energy is less productive.
