Roman Kartsivadze, who headed the Special Tasks Department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia (MIA), has been appointed head of the Special Operations Department at the State Security Service (SSSG), the agency said on May 1.
The transfer follows leadership changes in Georgia’s law enforcement and security services, under which Geka Geladze, who led the Interior Ministry, assumed the post of SSSG chief, while Mamuka Mdinaradze, who headed the SSSG, became State Minister for Coordination of Law Enforcement Bodies, a newly created position in the Georgian Dream government.
Geladze has already introduced Kartsivadze to personnel at the SSSG’s Special Operations Department, while it remains unclear who will replace him at the Interior Ministry’s Special Tasks Department.
Kartsivadze had led the MIA’s Special Tasks Department since June 2025, when he replaced Zviad Kharazishvili, also known as “Khareba,” who had faced international sanctions from several European countries and the United States over his role in the violent dispersal of protests in November-December 2024.
