A Finnish citizen is among 170 flotilla activists detained by Israel.
Israel’s defence forces have detained more than 170 activists who were part of an aid flotilla bound for Gaza, according to a statement by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A humanitarian flotilla of more than 50 vessels, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, had once again been heading toward Gaza with the aim of delivering aid to Gaza.
Twenty-four-year-old Helsinki resident Alex Oksanen was among those captured by the Israeli army and taken out of international waters, the flotilla’s organisers revealed in a post on Instagram.
Jussi Tanner, head of consular affairs at the Finnish foreign ministry, confirmed to news agency STT that it appears one Finnish national was detained.
The Left Alliance parliamentary group and the party’s members in the European Parliament have appealed to Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) to clarify the situation.
The flotilla set off from Marseille in France, Barcelona in Spain, and Syracuse in Italy.
