As every year, the highlight of Vienna Pride is the Rainbow Parade, which will take place on June 13th this year.
On its 30th anniversary, Vienna Pride refers to the first parade in 1996. As then, the participants parade through Vienna under the motto “Visible”. This is a strong sign that visibility is politically necessary then as now. “Equality cannot remain just lip service; we demand consistent legal measures and effective protection against discrimination and hate crime,” said chairwoman of HOSI Vienna, Ann-Sophie Otte, on Thursday.
Vienna Pride 2026 will take place from May 29th to June 14th. It is Austria’s largest LGBTIQ+ human rights event. The community has achieved a lot in the past decades, but a lot is “still open,” it said in a release. “It cannot be the case that queer people in Austria still have to wait for a ban on conversion therapies in 2026 or that intersex children continue to be insufficiently protected from unnecessary medical interventions,” said Otte.
As every year, the highlight of Vienna Pride is the Rainbow Parade, which will take place on June 13th this year. Over 300,000 people are expected on the Ringstrasse to demonstrate together for acceptance, respect and equality.
Groups, organizations and initiatives to take part in the Rainbow Parade can register online until May 11th at 12 p.m. (www.viennapride.at). The organizers want to create spaces for exchange, political discussions and shared and safe celebrations with numerous events surrounding the parade.
The director of the event, Karl Kreipel, looks forward to the anniversary with special significance. Three decades ago, it began with great courage to set up Pride. “We not only celebrate this anniversary, we carry it forward with pride and responsibility.”
And a sign of visibility will also be set in the streets of the federal capital. Vienna’s trams show solidarity with a rainbow flag. (APA)
