One sixth grade pupil died and two others were injured when the boy began shooting in a classroom on the morning of 2 April 2024.
A prosecutor in Vantaa has called for the grandfather of a boy involved in a shooting at a school in the city to receive a suspended prison sentence.
One 12-year-old sixth grade pupil died and two others were injured when the boy began shooting in a classroom on the morning of 2 April 2024, just as kids returned to school after the Easter holidays.
According to Yle’s information, the grandfather handed the weapon and its cartridges over to the then-12-year-old while the boy was spending the Easter holiday weekend at his grandfather’s home.
He told investigators that the pair had been practicing shooting at a target, after which he asked the boy to take the weapon to a gun cabinet located on the upper floor of his house.
However, the grandfather did not check that the boy had carried out his instructions, nor did he later verify that the weapon had been returned to the cabinet.
Instead, the boy hid the weapon and cartridges in his trousers pocket, and took them to his own home.
The grandfather then checked his gun cabinet after he saw news reports about the shooting at the school in Viertola, and realised the weapon was missing.
The prosecutor is demanding that the man receive a suspended prison sentence of four to six months, with the District Court of Eastern Uusimaa set to deliver its verdict next week.
The man has admitted to handing the weapon and cartridges over to the boy, and that he failed to check that it had been returned to the cabinet.
The 12-year-old boy was suspected of murder and two attempted murders, but due to his age at the time of the incident, the case was not filed with a prosecutor for consideration of charges.
