Kenitra (Morocco), April 30, 2026 (SPS) – Today, Thursday, the Sahrawi civilian prisoner within the Gdeim Izik group, Naama Asfari, began a hunger strike.
The Association for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners in Moroccan prisons received information from the family of the prisoner Naama Asfari, explaining the reasons for this militant step. It confirmed that the warning strike and then the open strike came to break the silence and systematic indifference that lasted for three years, as the Moroccan government and occupying state did not take any action, since the issuance of the “historic” opinion of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in April 2023.
She added that the open hunger strike has become a necessity and a duty to address the injustice and illegality of the detention of the Gdeim Izik group, and to draw the attention of the outside world, especially the United Nations and its mechanisms charged with following up on the issue of the Gdeim Izik detainees, and to remind the government and the occupying state of their legal responsibility to implement the recommendations and measures requested by the working group.
The Association for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners declares its unconditional solidarity with the prisoner Naama Asfari, and confirms its full support for his legitimate demands and the demands of his comrades inside Moroccan prisons. The Association also announces its intention to closely follow this struggle step, especially the danger it may pose to the prisoner’s health condition, and is in constant contact with his family to support them and inform them of all developments.
The association announced its support for the prisoner Naama Asfari in his warning strike and the subsequent open hunger strike, stressing that it will spare no effort in enlightening national and international public opinion regarding the miserable conditions experienced by all Sahrawi civilian prisoners in Moroccan prisons.
