Faleata Rugby Union has issued a formal apology to the rugby community of Samoa following a serious incident involving the mistreatment of a match official at Moamoa Field on Saturday, 26 April 2026.
The incident, which was witnessed by a large number of spectators and later widely circulated across social media platforms, involved unacceptable behaviour by certain players and individuals in attendance. The footage has since drawn significant public attention and concern, highlighting the need for stronger accountability and respect within the game.
In an official statement, the Faleata Rugby Union Executive made it clear that such conduct has no place in rugby. The union strongly condemned any form of abuse, intimidation, or violence directed at match officials, reiterating its zero tolerance stance on such behaviour.
Central to the union’s response was recognition of the referee involved, described as an international-level official, former player, and a proud son of Samoa. The Executive acknowledged his valuable contribution to the development of rugby in the country and expressed deep respect for his ongoing service to the sport.
Faleata Rugby Union also confirmed that the matter has been formally referred to the relevant legal authorities, including the Ministry of Police. All parties involved, ranging from players and clubs to spectators and associated groups, will be subject to due process. The union stated it will act in strict accordance with World Rugby laws and disciplinary procedures as the investigation progresses.
The organisation extended its appreciation to Chanel College (Moamoa), nearby villages, and individuals who assisted in ensuring the safety of match officials during the incident. Their actions were acknowledged as critical in preventing the situation from escalating further.
Reaffirming its commitment to the integrity of the sport, Faleata Rugby Union emphasised the importance of upholding the highest standards of safety, respect, and professionalism at all levels of the game. The union also voiced its full support for match officials across Samoa, recognising their essential role in maintaining the spirit and structure of rugby.
The incident has sparked wider discussion within the local rugby community about player and spectator conduct, as well as the need to protect officials who serve the game. As investigations continue, Faleata Rugby Union’s response signals a firm stance on accountability and a renewed focus on preserving the core values of rugby in Samoa.
