British king Charles last night he delighted the audience at the White House with his toast, and the recording of his speech spread on social networks. American president Donald Trump and the first lady Melania Trump they hosted him at a gala dinner celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence from British rule.
This was the first visit by a British monarch in two decades.
King Charles called the gala dinner “a significant improvement over the Boston Tea Party” and drew attention to the president’s “remodeling” of the East Wing of the White House, which no longer exists.
– I’m sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own small attempt to renovate the White House in 1814 – joked the king, as reported Daily Mail.
On August 24, 1814, British forces under Major General Robert Ross occupied Washington and burned the White House (then known as the President’s House). British troops burned the building — along with the Capitol and other buildings — in retaliation for an American attack on York, Ontario.
Charles also referred to Trump’s recent statement, during which he said that European countries would speak German if it were not for the USA.
– I dare say if we weren’t there, you would be speaking French – said King Charles, which made the president and his guests laugh.
He then revealed what he had brought as a gift to Trump – a large golden bell that hung from the conning tower of HMS Trump, a Royal Navy submarine that fought in the Battle of the Pacific in World War II.
– Let this be a testimony of the common history and bright future of our peoples. And if you ever need to contact us, just ring the bell – joked the monarch.
During the dinner, Trump praised the king’s speech before the US Congress.
– He gave a great speech, I was very jealous. I want to congratulate Charles on the fantastic speech he gave to Congress today. He made the Democrats stand up. I never managed to do that – said the American president, as written Daily Mail.
