Streaming sensation Darren Jason Watkins Jr known the world over as IShowSpeed (Speed for short) touched down in Dominica as part of his Caribbean Tour.
This most recent tour is the latest in a series of tours that saw him travel to Europe, China, India and various countries in Africa among others.
In Dominica he experienced the local cuisine, danced with the indigenous people of the Caribean the Kalinagos, learned local expressions and Kweyol words and sang a remixed version of his own song performed by internationally known bouyon veterans Triple K Band.
The streamer had even more comprehensive plans for Dominica but had to make several adjustments due to the effects of flooding and inclement weather on the island over the previous weekend.
In response Speed went full throttle ahead despite the slight detour he used the opportunity to donate all his earnings from the stream to Dominica’s flood recovery with his sponsor Expedia pledging to match his donation.
In his just under 3 hour worldwind tour in Dominica he started with a ritual Kalinago cleansing bath and received a Kalinago name “Elayti” meaning strength. He went on to face-off with Dominican Olympic Gold medalist Thea Lafond in a bounding competition where giving it his all he suffered a minor fall and knee scrape. Though he was bested by Thea she still declared him a winner and awarded (temporarily) her Olympic gold medal as his participation prize.
From there he performed our local dances including Bélé which he took to as a natural, learned about what the 767 cultural reference (Dominica’s area code) means which he initially confused with the viral Tik Tok trend “67”.
He wound up his tour with a demonstration of street jump and Dominica Carnival where he wore a Sensay costume and a live performance by Triple K band. He had high praise for bouyon which he declared as the “hardest” of the music he has experienced in the Caribbean (he has previously been to Trinidad, St. Lucia, Barbados and St. Vincent).
Speed was accompanied and guided by varous local personalities and officials including Jodie Dublin Dangleben, Jael Joseph, Monelle Alexis and Shy Guy from Shy Guy Tours served as his personal tour guide.
