The MET Programme, now in its fifth year, has been selected as a finalist for the Excellence in Learning Awards 2026.
The annual awards are hosted by the Learning & Development Institute, a professional body of more than 2,000 members across all businesses and industries in Ireland.
The MET Programme has been nominated for Best Graduate Development Initiative, alongside KPMG, Iarnród Éireann, RTÉ, Uisce Éireann, Medtronic, BAM and the Department of Public Expenditure.
Journalists learn on the job through a programme of training and mentoring
According to the Learning & Development Institute, the purpose of the awards is to promote excellence, best practice and innovation in the areas of development and training.
The winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Killashee Hotel, Naas, Co Kildare, on October 2.
Mediahuis Ireland, home to the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent and Sunday World, is currently recruiting for this year’s MET Programme intake, with two places available.
The two-year scheme offers people from all backgrounds a gateway to unrivalled training, mentoring and on-the-job experience.
There are two places on offer for news reporters, giving candidates the chance to develop their passion and skills alongside our award-winning editorial teams, including in audio and video.
The MET Programme, which was launched in 2022, is part of Mediahuis Ireland’s commitment to diversity and will be overseen by some of the most experienced journalists in the business.
Applications for this year’s MET Programme are open until May 4
Previous MET Programme participants who have gone on to secure permanent roles in the Irish Independent include, News & Political Reporter Maeve McTaggart, Personal Finance Journalist Saoirse Hanley and Dublin News Reporter Azmia Riaz.
