Vacationing in neighboring countries has been a topic of discussion on the Internet for years, but this season the question of prices has been raised to a higher level.
While apartment providers are referring to the market, location and demand, guests are increasingly calculating – and comparing.
This is exactly what a viral post from the Reddit platform shows, which started a heated discussion about apartment prices on the Adriatic and the limit that guests are willing to pay.
The author of the post shared his experience of searching for a vacation in Tučepi, a destination that has been considered one of the most sought-after for years Makarska Riviera. However, the offer he received – completely surprised him.
According to him, he found a nice apartment for four (2+2), but with the condition of a minimum stay of seven nights. And it wouldn’t be a problem if the price wasn’t – 220 euros per night.
“I literally fell off my chair,” he wrote.
What further surprised him was not only the high price, but also what you get for that money. In response, the owner of the apartment, with a touch of sarcasm, sent a comparative offer of a hotel in the same place – right next to the sea – for 1,650 euros for the same period, with breakfast and dinner included.
The question he asked soon became the central topic of discussion: how long will this model work?
The comments were, as expected, divided. One part of users believes that the matter is simple – if there is someone who is ready to pay 220 euros for the night, such prices will persist.
“If everyone says ‘no’, there won’t be 220 next year,” read one comment.
The author of the post partially agrees with that, but clearly draws the line: the apartment is nice, the location is excellent – but that price doesn’t make sense for him.
He particularly points out the problem of the ratio between investment and profit: according to him, the apartment looks more like a room with a terrace than a luxury accommodation, while the hotel offers additional facilities in the same price range – from food to full service.
It is the comparison with hotels that dominates the discussion. More and more travelers believe that apartments lose the race when the price exceeds a certain threshold.
“For 200 euros per night, you can find a hotel with two or three meals. Why would I cook and wash dishes after the beach?” wrote one user.
However, there are also those who believe that the expectations of guests are sometimes unrealistic. Accommodation in the first or second row to the sea on the Adriatic has long carried a serious price premium.
On the other hand, some claim that even in Tučepi you can find much more affordable apartments – from 70 euros per night – but with a compromise when it comes to luxury and equipment.
Alternatives outside of Croatia were also mentioned in the discussion – from Dublin and Miami to Spain, Ohrid, the Canary Islands, Turkey and even China – destinations where, according to the experiences of travelers, you can get more or at least a better price-quality ratio for the same money.
All this raises a broader question – how sustainable is this model.
Some commentators claim that the first signs of a slowdown in bookings are already noticeable, especially in the pre-season and during June, as well as that part of the regular guests did not return this year. Others, however, point out that stories of a “failed season” repeat themselves every year – while the final numbers break records almost regularly.
In the end, it all comes down to a simple question: how much are guests willing to pay – and do they really get what they expect for that money.
