Lao Front kicks off 12th national congress, sets 2030 development agenda
The 12th National Congress of the Lao Front for National Development (LFND) opened in Vientiane on Tuesday to review achievements over the past five years, set priorities and targets for 2026-2030, and elect a new leadership team for the next five years.
Politburo member and President of the Lao Front for National Development, Prof. Dr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, delivered the opening remarks at the two-day meeting, underlining the core duty of the LFND that has contributed significantly to national development.
“The Lao Front for National Development has been at the heart of ensuring continuing great solidarity among the entire Lao people, coordinating with Party and State organisations, mass organisations, and local administrations at all levels to inspire Lao people of all ethnic groups to contribute to the process of patriotism and development,” he told the meeting.
The congress was convened under the theme “Elevate the role of the Lao Front for National Development to a new level, strengthen great solidarity and unite the strength of the entire Lao people nationwide in building an independent and self-reliant economy”.
Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and President of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith, and former Presidents Choummaly Sayasone and Bounnhang Vorachit are attending the congress.
Highlighting achievements in implementing the resolutions of its 11th National Congress, the LFND has strengthened solidarity among the multiethnic Lao people in support of Party policies and observance of state laws.
By 2025, a total of 907,542 solidarity and conciliation families (representing 66.83 percent) had been established nationwide, along with 6,210 solidarity and conciliation villages (73.91 percent), and 107 solidarity districts (72.30 percent).
The LFND has also forged ties with people of Lao origin living abroad, encouraging them to contribute to the development of their motherland.
In 2024, it held the first-ever meeting with Lao expatriates abroad, bringing together more than 200 people.
Last year, more than 450 people of Lao origin now living abroad came to Laos to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Lao communities in other countries have provided financial support, including funding for a dormitory, educational equipment, and clothing.
The LFND has raised more than 58 billion kip from Lao and foreign businesses to assist poor families and natural disaster victims. They have also set up various funds, such as the solidarity and development fund (in collaboration with the Phongsavanh Group), which grew to include 25 funds with a total capital of over 100 billion kip. Over the past five years, the Lao Front received 81 petitions and proposals from citizens, forwarding them to the relevant authorities for solution.
The congress outlined six programmes and 62 projects for the next five years. The programmes relate to strengthening national solidarity, promoting and enhancing virtue, improving qualifications (skills and knowledge), reinforcing morality and ethical conduct, strengthening the LFND organisation at all levels, and international cooperation.
The congress is set to approve a draft political report, the Lao Front for National Development’s 2026-2030 development plan, and the regulations of the 12th Lao Front for National Development.
The congress will also approve the 12th Lao Front for National Development Central Committee, President, Vice President, Standing Committee, and Chairman of the Inspection Committee of the 12th Lao Front for National Development Central Committee.
