Each Tunisian inhabitant generates between 800 grams and 1 kg of waste per day! This was revealed today, Tuesday April 28, 2026, by the Director General of the National Waste Management Agency (ANGed), Badreddine Lasmar during the National Conference on the material recovery of organic waste.
The speaker specified that Tunisia produces between 3.5 and 4 million tonnes of household waste annually.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Conference on “Jawhara FM”, he underlined the importance of transforming this waste into environmental, economic and social solutions.
Mr. Lasmar particularly focused on “the production of organic compost intended for sustainable agriculture to replace chemical and industrial fertilizers”. He specified, in this capacity, that several experiments have been carried out in this context and that certain municipalities have engaged in the recycling of waste and the production of compost. “They have set up pilot centers which have proven their effectiveness, like Sousse, Bizerte, Sfax and El Mourouj,” he said.
The Director General of ANGed also insisted on the importance of generalizing this experience to all governorates of the Republic, in collaboration and partnership with the various stakeholders and the private sector.
“98% of the waste transformed into compost turned out to be compliant with standards and perfectly suitable for agricultural use, according to the tests carried out,” he concludes.
