The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Forestry is piloting the integration of drone technology in agriculture to optimise crop monitoring, improve precision in farming practices, reduce costs and increase overall farm productivity and sustainability.
The Government of Grenada recently purchased 9 drones valued at over EC$200,000, bringing the total Unmanned Aircraft System (UAV) managed by the Ministry of Agriculture to 12.
The UAV Pilot Programme builds on the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s UAV Programme, implemented during 2023 by the Ministry to support the integration of drone technology in the sector development and adoption of big data analytics, machine learning and AI tools tailored for agriculture and other key sectors.
A total of 10 officers are being trained by local company Aerial Vision. Upon completion, all participants will be certified pilots tasked with supporting the UAV Pilot Programme and serving their respective departments — Lands and Surveys, Praedial Larceny, Land Use, Public Relations and others.
