Breaking Dependency on Imports! Taiwan Tech Enters the Marshall Islands: Poultry Project to Boost Food Self-Sufficiency

(中央社訊息服務20260427 10:58:02)To strengthen food security in the Marshall Islands, the TaiwanICDF Technical Mission, in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce (MNRC), officially launched the “Poultry Farming Promotion Project” on April 14. This initiative introduces Taiwan’s advanced poultry farming expertise to establish a local production system, helping the Marshall Islands reduce its long-term reliance on imported eggs and enhance overall food resilience.

The Marshall Islands has long struggled with unstable egg supplies due to its heavy dependence on imports, which are vulnerable to global supply chain fluctuations, high transportation costs, and disease outbreaks like avian influenza. To address these structural challenges, TaiwanICDF is implementing technology transfers and institutional capacity building to create a stable and resilient poultry production model, thereby bolstering national food self-sufficiency.

TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary General Hsieh Pei-fen stated that this three-year project includes the establishment of a “National Quality Poultry Supply Center” in Majuro. The project introduces the “Black-feathered Taiwan Meat-and-Egg Dual-purpose Chicken”—originally from Yilan and proven to thrive in the Marshall Islands’ climate. The initial phase involves 3,000 layers, with plans to scale up based on performance. Starting May 2027, locally produced eggs will be supplied to school lunch programs, moving toward the “One Egg Per Day” policy goal. By 2028, annual production is expected to reach 480,000 eggs, significantly improving protein intake and nutritional quality for students.

The project also establishes a comprehensive “one-stop” management system covering breeding, hatching, and distribution. Quality chicks will be delivered to outer islands to promote sustainable, small-scale household farming, ensuring that residents in remote areas have access to fresh poultry and eggs.

Deputy Secretary General Hsieh further emphasized that this project is more than just a technical transfer; it is a concrete realization of the “Prosperity Partnership Initiative” proposed by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung. By creating demonstration sites and strengthening local capacities, Taiwan is helping its allies build autonomous and resilient poultry industries, ultimately securing food safety for the island nation.
