Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed early Wednesday the two-week ceasefire agreed between Iran and the United States and announced that the cessation of hostilities comes into effect immediately.
“I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, together with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon and elsewhere, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY,” Sharif said on the X social network.
The Pakistani president noted that he hopes that delegations from both countries will attend a round of negotiations in Islamabad this Friday to negotiate a “definitive agreement that resolves all disputes,” as Iran had already anticipated.
US President Donald Trump announced on social media that he had decided to postpone for two weeks the attack on critical Iranian infrastructure that he had threatened to carry out today if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, he announced the beginning of a ceasefire with Iran during this period of time within the framework of negotiations carried out with the intermediation of Pakistani authorities.
Trump added that he held talks with Sharif and Pakistani Chief of Staff Asim Munir, and that both asked him to “contain the destructive force that was going to be sent to Iran tonight.”
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that “safe passage” through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible during the same two-week period as a result of the agreement with the US.
Israel will respect the agreement reached by Washington and Tehran, according to a source consulted by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, although concerns persist about the agreement announced early this Wednesday.
