The Myanmar Embassy in Seoul issued an advisory on 5 November warning Myanmar nationals working in the Republic of Korea that transferring money through illegal hundi channels will result in severe legal action under South Korea’s Foreign Exchange Transactions Act.
If found using illegal hundi services, not only the senders, brokers, and operators, but all involved parties face up to three years in prison, as well as fines of up to 300 million won depending on the amount illegally transferred. Furthermore, relevant bank accounts will be frozen, and offenders may face deportation from South Korea.
In its statement, the embassy strongly urged Myanmar workers in Korea to strictly comply with the following measures when remitting 25 percent of their earned wages back to their families in Myanmar: use only legally registered banks or remittance service providers in the Republic of Korea; verify whether the recipient banks or remittance companies in Myanmar hold valid licenses from the Central Bank of Myanmar; accurately fill out sender identification details and recipient information;. and keep all transaction receipts and transaction history records securely.
