Andorra participates in the cross-border project Solpyr IIan initiative aimed at improving the knowledge, protection and management of the soils of the Pyreneeswhich has a budget of1,852,348 euros. The program, started this October, will last until May 2029 and will bring together eleven entities from France, Spain i Andorraplus eight associated organizations.
The Andorran participation will be borne by the Marcel Chevalier Private Foundationwhich will provide data, soil mapping of the country and field work. The entity will contribute to identifying areas with information gaps, validating observations on the ground and drawing up diagnoses comparable to those of the rest of the Pyrenees.
The project gives continuity to SOLPYR, started in 2024, and plans to expand the maps of the Pyrenean soils and establish a common methodology to assess its state of conservation. It will also analyze the effects of agricultural, livestock, forestry and tourism activities on erosion, soil compaction and the loss of organic carbon.
The initiative will include awareness-raising actions, such as teaching materials, training for educators, a traveling exhibition and citizen science activities on mountain trails. The data and indicators obtained will be incorporated into the Geoportal of thePyrenean Observatory of Climate Change and will be used to develop recommendations for the management of the territory.
Solpyr II is coordinated by the University of Toulouse and has 65% co-financing from the European Union, through the Interreg program Poctefa 2021-2027. The aim is to develop tools to preserve mountain soils, which are particularly vulnerable to erosion, tourist pressure and the effects of climate change.
