Dominican election specialist Ian Michael Anthony is at the head of a Commonwealth delegation observing Grenada’s general election today, Thursday, November 5, 2026. Anthony, a former Chief Elections Officer in Dominica, is leading the assignment as the Commonwealth continues its work to encourage democratic participation and strengthen electoral standards across its member countries.
The observation team was appointed by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey. Anthony is working alongside a Secretariat support group headed by Lindiwe Maleleka, Political Adviser within the Electoral Support Section.
The mission’s programme includes consultations with a range of stakeholders, including election administrators, political representatives, candidates, civil society groups, journalists and security personnel. The discussions are intended to provide the observers with a broad understanding of the electoral environment and the arrangements in place for the vote.
The Commonwealth team will also conduct direct observation at polling stations, paying attention to their opening, the voting process, the conclusion of polling and the counting of votes. The observations will be used to assess the conduct of the election and inform the mission’s conclusions.
After completing its work in Grenada, the delegation will compile a report of its observations and recommendations for submission to Botchwey. The team is expected to conclude its visit and depart the island on November 7.
