Attached held a national meeting in Nuuk at the weekend. Baglandet believes that the party should stay in the coalition, says the re-elected chairman.
– Our participation in the coalition was not questioned by any of the participants. We expect that we will continue, says Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen to Sermitsiaq.
The discussion about Atassut’s role as a coalition party arose when several of Atassut’s proposals, which were central to the election campaign last year, such as a 30 percent tax without deductions and the reopening of Illorsuit, were rejected by the Naalakkersuisut partners in the spring.
Therefore, the national meeting participants had to decide the party’s continued support, Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen told Sermitsiaq this summer. The issue is now settled and Atassut remains in the coalition.
Atassut has two members in Inatsisartut, and regardless of whether the party is in the coalition or not, they are not decisive for whether Naalakkersuisut has a majority in parliament.
Political goals
The party’s delegates decided on a total of 24 proposals at the weekend’s national meeting. Among these was a question about private medical clinics.
– Atassut Nuuk has put forward a proposal to strengthen the possibilities for private medical clinics, says Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.
The party’s two members in Inatsisartut, Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen and Bentiaraq Ottosen, must now work to improve the possibilities for private medical clinics.
– We have a member on the health committee, and through that and the dialogue with naalakkersuisoq for health, we will investigate how these possibilities can be realised. If necessary, we will put forward proposals, says the chairman, who was re-elected to the chairmanship at the national meeting without an opponent.
The person at the center is Atassut’s message regarding the treatment of the mentally ill, which was also among the topics at the national meeting, says the chairman. The goal is for the area to be improved by making better use of the opportunities in the Commonwealth.
– When it comes to the mentally ill, we have discussed that cooperation in the Commonwealth must be further improved. We have discussed better cooperation with the Danish treatment centers for the mentally ill.
What is not good about their relationship in Greenland?
– There are of course a lot of good things. But the idea is to improve cooperation from the Greenlandic side regarding the people who need extensive help, who have come to Denmark, and who may have to stay in Denmark.
Tax breaks were not discussed
Last year, Atassut led an election campaign on the ambition of lower taxes. But when the proposal was discussed at Inatsisartut’s spring meeting, it proved difficult to gain support for it. The chairman’s proposal was not supported by the other parties, nor by the coalition partners. However, the tax issue was not discussed at the national meeting either, according to the chairman:
– Inflation was discussed. That is, the value of money’s purchasing power. How the tax should be designed is not what we are talking about here, says Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.
He says that the national meeting participants also decided as a goal to improve fishing opportunities in the area around Qaanaaq.
The main board
The party chose its leadership for the next three years on Saturday.
Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen was re-elected as chairman. Bentiaraq Ottosen continues as political deputy chairman. Malu Ostermann, who was a candidate for the general election this year, will be organizational vice-chairman. Ellen Schärfe, who was also a candidate for the general election and has returned to politics, becomes a member of the executive committee.
Thomas Duneq, who is a member of the settlement boards in Siorapaluk and Qeqertat, also joins the executive committee.
Otto Nakingi from Tiilerilaaq, a member of the settlement board, becomes a member of the main board. Knud Kleemann, member of the municipal board in Avannaata Kommunia, will also become a member of the main board. Arnannguaq Jeremiassen, who is a member as deputy in the Municipality of Qeqertalik, is among those who join the main board. Atassat’s youth must also appoint a member.
