Today 2nd, Inatsisartut considered a proposal from the chairman of Naleraq, Pele Broberg, that Naalakkersuisut should be instructed, based on recommendations from EMRIP, to carry out a data-based registration of the original population of Greenland “Inuit”.
– How can we protect the rights of an indigenous people if we do not have sufficient knowledge of who the rights holders are and how they are treated? asked Pele Broberg in the hall.
He refers to a recommendation from the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples from 2023, where the Special Rapporteur recommends that Denmark and Greenland, within their areas of competence, collect disaggregated data on Inuit in Denmark and Greenland to inform legislation, policy and programs in all areas, including education, health, justice, gender equality, violence against indigenous women and children, equality for people with disabilities and prison and parole services.
However, there was no support from the rest of Inatsisartut. During the first reading, the chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D):
– Naalakkersuisut will not accept that citizens are treated differently on the basis of gender, ethnicity and religion.
Six voted for the proposal, while 16 voted against. The proposal is thus rejected.
