The disappearance of an Icelander in Budapest, Hungary has been brought to the attention of the International Department of the National Police. The investigation of the case is at a preliminary stage, but the man disappeared without a trace about two weeks ago.
The 53-year-old Hákon Þór Elmers disappeared in Budapest, Hungary on Saturday evening, April 11, but there has been no sign of him since he got on a bus at the Budapest airport that evening. His son Aron Freyr Hákonarson discussed the matter with Vísi yesterday and said that Hákonar’s family is very worried.
Hákon has been staying in Budapest for the last four months and had a flight home to Iceland that day. According to Aron, his father has been on a trip for the past few months, but those plans have fallen flat on his family and it was not like him to plan such a trip.
It is not possible to reach Hákon by phone, but Aron told Vísi that the Icelandic police are now looking at GPS data and whether it is possible to find his father that way. Then Vísir spoke to a hotel employee who said that the staff knew Hákonar well as he had stayed there for the past few months. The employee said that when Hákon left the hotel on Saturday about two weeks ago, he seemed confused. Silvía Llorens Izaguirre, assistant superintendent and head of the International Department of the Inspector General of Police, confirms that Hákon’s disappearance is under investigation.
“I can confirm that the case is on our table and came to us last week. Is there any suspicion of criminal conduct in the case? As it stands today, it does not appear to be the case.”
Cases like this are always complicated. “And always difficult and they come with a certain procedure that we follow. So we just have to see where the investigation leads us. But it is being done with the Hungarian police and the police in the capital area.”
