The number of students at universities in the Czech Republic continues to grow. At the end of 2025, more than 330,000 people were enrolled — significantly more than just a few years ago.
The number of students at public and private universities in the Czech Republic has risen again. At the end of 2025, a total of 330,547 people were enrolled at universities. This continues the trend of recent years: since 2019, the number of students has increased by around 42,000 people, or 15 per cent.
According to the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ), the increase is mainly being driven by the growing number of newly enrolled students. While around 56,000 people enrolled at a university for the first time in 2016, the figure had risen to around 74,000 by 2025 — an increase of 33 per cent.
At the same time, the proportion of younger students is also growing. The share of students under the age of 25 recently stood at 74 per cent, compared with 66 per cent in 2019. Traditional full-time degree programmes are also becoming increasingly significant. Their share rose from 76 to 83 per cent over the same period. In addition, more students are choosing bachelor’s degree programmes.
The increase between 2024 and 2025 was particularly strong. The total number of students rose by five per cent within a single year.
Above-average growth was recorded in the fields of social sciences, journalism and information sciences, where the number of new enrolments increased by 20 per cent. Degree programmes in business, administration and law (+14 per cent), as well as natural sciences, mathematics and statistics (+10 per cent), also recorded significant growth.
At the end of 2025, the largest number of students were enrolled in business, administration and law programmes, with a total of 66,817 students. This was followed by health and welfare programmes with 45,073 students, and engineering, manufacturing and construction with 39,833 students. Teacher training and education programmes also remained among the largest fields of study.
The share of international students remained stable at around 18 per cent. In total, approximately 59,000 foreign nationals were studying in the Czech Republic at the end of 2025. The largest group consisted of students from Slovakia, accounting for 41 per cent, followed by students from Ukraine with 14 per cent.
