Can a rose survive the aridity of the desert?
It was taught to me by Mireia Fernández in the last edition of the Titan Desert that was held in Almeria. We drove many kilometers together and I saw that she was wearing a rose and I thought it must be some kind of love.
But?
It was in tribute to a friend of his called Rosa who died of cancer a few days before the competition. That rose arrived perfect, after five stages through the desert, in practically subhuman conditions, due to the care that Mireia put into it.
The story doesn’t end here.
This year it has decided to create a team with six people who have suffered from cancer who will explain their experience through Instagram during the competition, to give visibility and reinforce the message that the disease does not have to be a brake to continue enjoying life, in our case with the bicycle, which helps us look forward.
The team is called A rose against cancer.
And we will also collect funds that will be allocated entirely to Cris against cancer, for research into the disease.
You also have a history of fighting cancer.
At the beginning of March 2020, I was diagnosed with two tumors. Full pandemic Overcrowded hospitals Anesthesiologists fully dedicated to covid. I had to wait until the end of April to have a biopsy, those were days of great anxiety for me and finally I insisted so much that they did it without anaesthetic. I didn’t care, I wanted to know what he had anyway.
The result?
Two malignant tumors in the prostate. I got on the waiting list and in June they took everything away from me. The doctors were telling me not to take the bike…
… and he didn’t listen to them much…
It was clear that I wanted to do the Titan Desert, which was held in November. It was very important to me because it would have been the first edition that I would have missed because of some sick sickness. Being able to do it gave me a lot of energy and the desire to fight.
In fact, only one of the editions has been lost.
Last year I dislocated my shoulder, the trochrite crumbled. I couldn’t hold on to the handlebars of the bike. It was unworkable. I had to make the decision to quit.
Another reason that makes this a special edition?
It is a tough competition, and finishing it will already make us very happy and, above all, it will give us a lot of strength to continue moving forward.
