Algerian-Turkish cooperation on the latest techniques for treating Parkinson’s disease

    Expressiveness

Doctors and specialists in neurology recently discussed, at the Irina Hotel in Setif, the latest developments related to the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, during a scientific day organized by the Turkish Medipol Hospital Group, with the participation of Professor Ali Zerh, one of the well-known specialists in the field of surgery for movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease, and in the presence of a number of Algerian doctors, especially from the province of Setif and its environs.
The meeting allowed for the opening of a direct discussion between the Algerian doctors and Turkish Professor Ali Zara about the developments witnessed in the care of Parkinson’s patients, especially in cases where medications are no longer able to adequately control the symptoms, in addition to reviewing various modern therapeutic options and clinical trials in the field of movement disorders.
The organization of this meeting comes at a time when treatments for Parkinson’s disease are witnessing remarkable development, especially with the emergence of techniques that help control some motor symptoms in patients who do not benefit adequately from drug treatment. Among the most prominent of these options is deep brain stimulation technology, known as “deep brain stimulation” or DBS, which is based on implanting fine electrodes in specific areas of the brain to modify electrical activity associated with movement disorders.
The Medipol Hospitals Group indicates that its center specializing in Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders adopts this type of treatment, as the patient is carefully evaluated before determining his suitability for surgical intervention, and then the process is followed by a precise stage to adjust the device and program it to suit each patient’s condition. Professor Ali Zara presented cases of patients who suffered from severe motor symptoms and did not get an adequate response to medications, before they benefited from deep brain stimulation technology and improved their ability to control their movements and practice their daily activities.
Published data from the Medipol group indicate that Professor Ali Zara has 30 years of clinical and surgical experience in functional neurosurgery, having performed more than 1,450 deep brain stimulation operations. Surgical treatment is no longer the only option being talked about in this field, as the group is reviewing the magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound treatment technique, known for short as MRgFUS, which is a non-surgical technique used to target specific areas of the brain in some patients who suffer from movement disorders and tremors. The group explains that this technique could be an option for some patients who do not benefit adequately from medications or are not suitable for some surgical interventions.
According to the Supervisor of Medipol Hospitals in the North Africa region, Ms. Nour Al-Huda Ouissi, the meeting is of great importance, especially with the growing interest of Algerian patients in the advanced treatments available in Turkey, most notably Parkinson’s and movement disorder treatments. The Medipol Group has previously announced that it is receiving patients from outside Türkiye for treatment of Parkinson’s disease, including Algerian patients who have benefited from deep brain stimulation operations.
The representative of the Medipol Hospitals Group confirmed that the meeting allows for opening bridges of cooperation between doctors in the two countries, and makes the meeting an occasion for discussion and exchange of experiences and knowledge.
She also appreciated the participation of Setif doctors, which reflects the interest of the Algerian medical family in developments in various medical specialties. The meeting allowed Algerian doctors to learn about developments in the diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders, and at the same time opens direct channels of communication with Turkish medical teams.
