The Business Training Centre (BTC) is set to provide vocational and digital skills training to 150 unemployed and underemployed young people in Dominica through a new programme funded by the Maria Holder Memorial Trust.
The year-long initiative, titled “Digital Inclusion & Skills Development for Unemployed Youth in Dominica,” runs from September 2026 to September 2027.
The programme is aimed at addressing some of the practical challenges facing young people seeking employment, particularly those who may be willing and ready to work but do not have the certifications employers require.
According to a BTC press release, the cost of training and limited access to computers can also prevent young people from gaining the skills they need to compete for jobs.
The initiative is designed to help remove some of those barriers by providing participants with vocational training, internationally recognized certification and digital skills that are increasingly required in the workplace.
Training will be offered in Electrical Technician, Plumbing, Building Construction, Hotel Receptionist, Hospitality and Culinary Arts, Medical Administrative Assistant, Efficient Data Entry, Diploma in Secretarial Studies and Digital Marketing.
Digital literacy will form part of each course rather than being offered as a separate subject, allowing participants to develop computer skills alongside their chosen vocational area.
Participants will also complete a six-to eight-week internship with one of BTC’s employer partners in the construction, hospitality or administrative sectors.
Applicants must be between 18 and 40 years old and must be unemployed or underemployed. Priority will be given to early school leavers, single parents and people from low-income households.
The programme has limited spaces, with applicants to be selected based on need and their commitment to completing the training.
The initiative comes against the backdrop of continued concerns about youth unemployment and the gap between the qualifications held by job seekers and those sought by employers.
