The National Gendarmerie began tightening supervision and issuing fines and violations amounting to 1 million centimes against every vehicle driver who operated the audio-visual devices in the front of the vehicle while driving.
In this context, the road security factions and companies affiliated with the National Gendarmerie warned drivers against operating and using audio-visual devices such as digital tablets, additional screens, or phones intended for watching videos, in the front of the vehicle while driving, and considered this a traffic violation of the fourth degree, resulting in the driver being obligated to pay a fine of 10,000 Algerian dinars.
In the details of the legal provisions contained in the new Traffic Law No. 26-09 of May 12, 2026, in its Article 121, the use or operation of audio-visual devices in the front of the vehicle is classified as fourth-degree violations.
The law excludes from this the devices designated exclusively to assist in driving or navigation, such as the “GPS” positioning system, provided that it does not obstruct the field of view or distract the driver’s attention, in addition to the original devices represented by the factory-built screens in modern cars, which are not considered a violation as long as they are designed within the vehicle’s specifications and are not used to display materials that distract the driver while the vehicle is driving.
The new procedures brought by the Traffic Law and the security services responsible for road security began implementing them in the field, after a record high number of traffic accidents was recorded, as a result of the use of these devices added to the dashboard, which take up space from the windshield, obstructing and blocking the field of vision.
In a related context, the Information and Traffic Coordination Center of the National Gendarmerie warned against placing a mobile phone in the front of the vehicle on a holder or (Support) while driving, regardless of its purpose, whether for conducting audio-visual conversations or for the purpose of watching films of matches or other things, and stressed that this behavior diverts and distracts the driver’s focus from the road for a certain period, partially or completely, and thus creates the appropriate atmosphere for traffic accidents to occur, indicating that the use of a mobile phone while driving is a means of distraction, and exploiting an important part of the driver’s abilities outside of driving. “With this, we lose focus.”
