Chavismo and a sector of the opposition will begin this Thursday the second cycle of negotiations promoted by the United States. In this new phase, the delegations will continue the debate on the judicial system and will incorporate the review of civil guarantees, political rights and freedom of expression.
The head of the opposition representation, Dinorah Figuera, arrived in the country on Monday to join the working groups. On the part of the ruling party, the delegation is led by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez.
This new meeting occurs after the culmination of the first phase of talks on August 12, a process in which María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia are not part. During this initial stage, the parties agreed on the total renewal of the Supreme Court of Justice and the management to recover assets abroad intended to care for the victims of the June 24 earthquake.
International support and diplomatic relations
The dialogue process generated reactions at the international level. The British Minister for Latin America, Chris Elmoreexpressed before his country’s Parliament his government’s support for the talks process.
“The United Kingdom welcomes the political talks led between Rodríguez and Figuera, as well as the progress achieved so far through that dialogue process,” Elmore said in a written report presented in London.
Following the announcement of the appointment of a new British ambassador in Caracas, the Venezuelan Executive celebrated the elevation of the level of diplomatic relations and ratified its intention to recover State resources frozen abroad, including the gold reserves deposited in the Bank of England, valued at nearly 2 billion dollars.
